My wife randomly wants to sleep with the hallway light on and I'm curious to know why?

lol but
it might be that she is nervous of intruders? If the lights are on in the house they often won't bother coming inside. beats me though. lights cost $$ so that might be annoying for you in the future

Has there been a recent break-in at your house or in the immediate area?
Has she been having nightmares lately?

Those two might make her feel less at ease and she likely wants to feel like she can see everything near your bedroom so she's in control.
