What can I do about it except erasing the drive because it holds sensitive irretrievable data.

Cracking that type of Hard Drive using normal means of hacking is virtually impossible without the time and resources, only the NSA or high Govt. Org. have that kind of resources. Your best bet is to contact the vendor WD and provide proof that it is in fact yours. As they are the ones who wrote the code they're the ones who can probably get past the security the fastest. Sidenote: 256bit password is pretty hard to crack so next time put your password list somewhere safe. Good Luck
Thank you for taking the time to reply but I am absolutely certain that the password is correct as it is solely my property and only I have ever used it. I am however considering applying for it's warranty which is still valid. Thank you for your time and patience.
