My resident cat attacked me while putting the new cat in a separate room. Why? They weren't getting?

Were they both female or both male? Having the 2 same gender animals can cause conflict between them. It could also be jealousy if that cat has been with you for a long time and then saw you with another cat. I had a cat that was that way.
