Hey guys, my mum always wishes that she had a tortoise, and I want to get her one for Christmas, but have absolutely no idea about them. Can anyone direct me to a site for complete beginners, or recommend a very easy breed and cheap set up for them? Thanks guys. I'm in the UK by the way.

I don't really know any websites for tortoises, but i know a good beginner tortoise. A Russian Tortoise is about $100 in the US. They are easy to take care of and live about 50-80 years. They only grow 6-8 inches, even though they are small they require a large amount of space. I would recommend a forty gallon tank, the substrate should be
anything except for gravel, sand, or anything that can scratch it shell. They love to climb and will dig so give them some room to dig. You should have a uvb light, a heating light and basking light about 75-100 watts. They should have a water bowl that is as big as there size and they should also have a place to hide or they could get depressed. One half of the tank should have the basking, uvb and heating light. That will be the warm side. The other half should have no lights at all and will be the cold side, make sure that the tortoises have a place to hide on the cold and warm side. I am sorry to say that tortoises are not cheap but are still fun to have as a pet, and you have them for life.
