My mum has bipolar, me and my brother were taken away from her when we were young, I try and visit her a few times but each time she tells me she doesn't know me, and that she is not my mother. Is this part of the illness? Will it always be this way?

Bipolar is an illness, although I do not recall that forgetting who your children are is a symptom. Bipolar just means that your mood and emotions can change instantly and quickly. They are not very stable people. Are you positive this is your mother ? Maybe she has another illness you are not aware of ? Such as alzheimer's .
Yes she is definitely my mother, I know that for sure and no she doesn't have any form of Alzheimer's. She had an extremely bad psychotic breakdown when she lost me and my brother and I think she developed schizophrenia and she was hospitalised for a very long time. Then I wasn't allowed to see her for years and year and now that I am old enough she doesn't seem to remember me and I just can't figure out why
