... for now. I will buy a larger one if he starts to grow. I have these really large containers that I cant use as tanks, but I was wondering if it would be good for him to be able to swim in there sometimes. Would exposing him to a larger space be disorienting, and would he be upset when he's put back in the small one?

No matter how small fish may seem, they still need space to swim and thrive. I would DEFINITLY recommend putting him in a 3-5 gallon tank/container. Giving him a bigger space will allow him to develop and live a happy lifestyle. Also i would recommend feeding him small portions twice a day.
