The first line of defense against depression and anxiety is B vitamins. Get B-50 or B-100 pills. Vitamin B2 is a water soluble dye that turns urine bright yellow. When the color fades, it's time for another dose. Read some books about nutrition so you know how to eat right.
B vitamins are commonly sold as B-50 or B-100. The size of the dose is not important, so your friend can cut the pills in halves or quarters to make them last longer. Then carry the bottle and take a piece every hour or whenever he thinks of it.
Panic attacks are a result of an amygdala response causing the adrenal system to dump "danger" chemicals into the bloodstream at a very fast rate triggering the "fight or flight" response needlessly. They can show up just out of the blue. Once this dump occurs only time will correct this. The body needs to exit the response and flush the chemicals from the system. As to what to do? Don't be judgmental and just be present for the individual. Read up about about the limbic system of the brain and the adrenals. These are the parts of the body responsible. A panic attack like this never appears rational but the mind enters a different phase of thinking and rational thought is not a key player any longer. Long term for this individual is to discover what triggers the response and address that. There is probably some area of their life that is trouble they are ignoring rather than addressing. Just be a friend is the best thing you can do.
