My friend has been taking 50,000 iu vitamin d a day. What will happen to him if he keeps doing it?

The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause poor appetite, nausea and vomiting. Weakness, frequent urination and kidney problems also may occur. Treatment includes the stopping of excessive vitamin D intake.

The amount of vitamin D to cause nasty effects is not known. Milk is limited to 400 units per quart because that amount didn't kill any babies and more than that did kill a few. Adults are advised to limit intake to 2500 units per day. More information may have been learned since I studied the subject, so I suggest you study some current reports. Or just tell your friend to quit if he notices any of the symptoms noted above.
