He's testing new water, trying to see what you think of him. It's his silent way of figuring out if you have feelings for him. In other words, I do believe that he may like you, more than a friend, and is trying to see how you would respond to that without threatening the existing friendship. When you asked what he meant, he was probably a tad bit embarrassed, maybe disappointed, but he didn't want it to show so he changed to subject.
