I booked a day off with the approval of my line manager, but when my boss returned from holiday he crossed my name off and gave no reason. Is he allowed to do this? I have not been approached about this at all.

no he isn't suppose to do those things he at lease should have come talked to you before he did something like that he probably thinks he can do anything he wants he is the boss which in our book he shouldn't have done so without talking to you first ask around and see if he has done that to any body else its just wrong i would approach him on it
Actually it depends on the the chain of command structure. If you have followed the correct company policy and it is your line managers role to sign you off on leave and he has done so, they cannot cancel your leave. Talk to your line manager and tell him you have already booked (anything you can think of that can't be canceled) and won't be in on that day as he has already authorised your leave. He can ask you to purspone you leave but he can't force you to. However if you line manager has overstepped his authority, that is a matter between him and his boss and it is not your responsibility and you shouldn't be penalised.
Learn as much employment law as you can and study your companies policies. You have to take the fight to them. Be known as the employee not to f**ked with, not the push over.
