I’ve searched Google and I couldn’t find what this phenomenon/style is called. I’ve noticed that even reputable news sources will do this. Here is an example: “Half a million hoverboards recalled in US” - BBC News or “Tax refunds could be delayed for half a million Alabamians” - AP News. This has been going for a very long time, since I can remember, but lately I’ve been getting annoyed with this type of reporting. I know it’s done to overstate the number and maybe even mislead. Does anyone know what this style is called and what are your thoughts on this topic?
