There is no point in arguing with someone who believes that way. Remember, it took Europeans almost 350 years to accept the moslem concept of a number for nothing, and clock makers to this day still have not fully accepted the Arabic numbering system.
There are several ways to define numbers. One is "the length of a line", another is "the way we count" also called "whole numbers." There are real numbers, imaginary numbers, and maybe some other definitions I haven't used.
Draw a line and call it a road map. Say there is a camp near the middle this line and you build a camp one mile to the right of there. The name of that camp is 1. A mile further you have another camp named 2. What is the name of your camp? And what is the name of a camp one mile to the left of there?
Suppose you run a bank and your client depopsits money in a checking account. He writes checks equal to the money he deposited. You pay the checks. How do you describe the state of his account? He writes more checks which you also pay. Now how do you describe the state of his account?
In each example the answers are "zero" and "negative". We live with those numbers.
Oh, and speaking of imaginary numbers, TIME is imaginary. So don't get hung up on that.
