If you live in the US, with no contract, legally you are likely living in a State that is at will, which means, you can leave or they can fire you without notice. There are some exceptions in most States that revolve around your job type is critical to the livelihood of others.. such as Nursing, power plant operator, EMT, etc.. If you have a professional job, 1 month is standard, an hourly job, 2 weeks.
It's very different in Canada. In Canada (in the absence of any contractual notice requirement) you must give "reasonable notice". And reasonable notice is determined based on the nature of your job, level of your responsibilities, whether you have a critical role to play on a key program or project which will require the employer to find a qualified replacement to mitigate any harm to the program or project. As a rule of thumb, an ordinary employee, say, in retail or clerical job in an office or factory, minimum 2 - 3 weeks notice. The greater the level of responsibility, etc., the longer the notice period, which can extend to as much as 3 months or more in unusual cases.
