Hi, my laptop got a smart hard drive failure, I'm going to get it replaced, I backup my old one before it broke on an external hard drive, how would I go about restoring the new hard drive with my external hard drive, I don't have a disc for the laptop as it didn't come with one, any help would be appreciated

Firs you are going to need to have an OS (operating system) on your new laptop. I strongly suggest purchasing a copy of Windows 10 (Home Premium should be fine for you). Otherwise most of your programs won't work, as they were designed for Windows. However, if you have no money Ubuntu is a free operating system that feels (note, feels, not is) like Windows and works pretty good. In order to restore the files on the backup drive, just plug it into computer when you have an OS on their (again, preferably windows for compatibility reasons) and simply copy and paste the entire contents of the backup drive onto your primary hard drive.
Yes, the Windows XP disc will work, that will give you an OS (just put the disc in and boot off it), however Microsoft doesn't support XP anymore so it's no longer secure, so unless you need to get on your computer right now I recommend against that. Only Windows 7 and 8.1 can upgrade to 10, and that's only free for a few more weeks.
I have an old windows xp disc with a code could I just use that? And how will I get to install it just enter the disc with the new hard drive in and it will start automatically? Also I did a back up of everything on my external hard drive if I transfer it over will u get my windows 10 back I got it for free
