My gran said kitchen instead of living room, and scullery instead of kitchen. Was this as unusual as it seemed? She was from the north east of England so might have been pitmatic but it seemed odd to me and now.

The term scullery continues to be in use in its original sense in Britain and Ireland, or as an alternative term for kitchen in some regions of Britain, typically Northern Ireland, North East England, so it would make sense for your gran to use this word instead of kitchen. There might have been a similar situation with the word kitchen and living room.
