Joining air force reserve then after contract is up go active duty?

So I'm going to college and was wondering if I can join the reserves while I'm there and then after my contract is up switch to active duty. If it helps my career of choice is combat controller. I've read other forums and people say joining active duty with prior service is nearly impossible and was wondering if anybody had any truth to this.
