... inspector quickly brushed over asbestos testing simply saying that I didn't need to do it. Being a first time buyer I didn't really give it a second thought. I have two closets and a pantry that are floored with 9x9 tiles. The closet tiles are all intact but the pantry flooring has at least three areas where the tile is broken away exposing the wood underneath. Should I be worried?

Asbestosis is a disease of the lungs. Particles are contained in the 1950 to 1964 tiles on most floors. To breath one particle is to release like a razor blade into your lungs. A not good idea.
Your inspector and I often looked for heating pipes wrapped in bulky wrapped material.
Here in Edmonton, the condition exists also. Apartment blocks are closed and crews specially equipped remove all traces. Often there is a total rebuild as walls are often dismantled. Hospitals have become vacant places because of this product.
Use great care when removing tiles. They can destroy your ability to breathe later in life.
