Is there a real-world situation where replacing a square with a rectangle would cause big problems?

My friend jokingly claimed that, to him, all rectangles can be classified as squares. I was wondering if there is anything that requires a square to function, and changing that would be serious? (Imagine all the squares in the world suddenly stretch out and become rectangles; Where might that cause serious, real-world problems?)
