I was told that there is a difference between being left wing and just being "left", whereas left could be compared to being liberal? Is that true?

The idea of left and right is known as a political spectrum. In between the two, you have a centre. Left-wing is a more specific term as it specifies "how left" a political viewpoint or person may be.
You are also correct in thinking "being liberal" is linked with being left-wing, since liberalism is popular within the left-wing supporters. The opposite would be right-wing who may be less liberal.
