From reviews it appears that most that claim to be are not, only resistant. Just ruined a mattress using a vinyl cover.

If you have a cat, a plastic cover will not survive the encounter. If you don't have a cat, the plastic cover will crack within a few months. I think the chemicals in the mattress dry it out. The only other thing you can do is to put it in a plastic box, but then you don't have a mattress any more.
