All the shells in any atom, whether its hydrogen or uranium is same. Shell is like a common place where all the electron have maximum chance to meet i.e highest electron density. All the shell have subshells which decides the number of electron it contains. These are s(2 electron), p(6 electron), d(10 electron), f(14 electron) and so on. According to these electrons fills in the atom. For more details u can go through afbau principle, pauli's exclusion principle, hunds rule and quantum numbers. For ease just imagine nucleus is a ball and it contains many other concentric hollow spherical balls around it. As we increase the radius, surface area increases and so the electron carrying capacity. Also i would like to tell u fact, most of the space in an atom is free and if all the atoms are compressed, earth will be having size, just like a baseball!!!
Thank you so much SFUICH! This helped me so much!
