Is the marine ball mandatory this year?

my boyfriend is stationed at MCAS in san diego and he doesnt wanna take me to the ball and i was wondering if its mandatory

I think he has to go but you don't have to. I am not positive on that though. My fiance is in the Marines and I know he talks about going.
