Is social media a reliable source. Yes or no? Why?

Thanks to technology, we can connect with more people. Texting, social networking, and other social media have made it seem possible to maintain a friendship without being in someone's presence. But, meaningful conversation have been replaced by rapid fire texts and tweets. People have fewer face-to-face interactions.
What happened to getting out and meeting people. As old fashion as it may seem why not write a letter, it sends the message that you care enough about someone to give them your undivided attention. In today's world it may be a challenge, but it can be beneficial and rewarding.
