Is religion socially irresponsible?

Question

I saw a documentary (again) which posited that most religion is socially irresponsible because it roots morality in centuries-old concepts of person-to-person behavior, without allowing room for expansion on modern issues such resource hogging and environmental awareness.  Christianity (SAID THE FILM) is especially irresponsible because it provides its members with the certainty of eternal life in paradise, all for the null-result actions of belief and prayer.

I'm not sure about this, but it's an interesting idea.  What do you all think?

Yes, it's socially irresponsible.  While Christianity purports to build love between people, that only applies between Christians (of the same cult), and views everyone else as an enemy (but they make themselves feel better about that by saying they'll pray for them).

I think that there are good things about religion.  It teaches us moral virtue and how to be a good person.  I also believe there is nothing wrong with believing in heaven.  Whether heaven exist or not is a different story.

We must understand that religion is not socially irresponsible, but it remains as a kindergarten in as much as it can only teach us the ABC of God and theology. Unfortunately we are blindly following scriptures written thousands of years ago, without interpreting them correctly. This is not about Christianity or Hinduism or any religion. All religions are good because they intend to teach us to believe in God. But unfortunately we remain in the kindergarten for the rest of our life. Just like we go the university, we must evolve into spirituality, we must ask questions and investigate what the religion says and what the scriptures say and ultimately we will realize the Truth that God lives in the temple of our heart, Corinthians 3: 16; the kingdom of God is within you, Luke 17:20-21. When we realize that we are the Divine Soul and not what we appear to be then we realize that religion is a kindergarten.

By itself religion is not irresponsible, but followers of religions are because followers are fanatics and followers do not have understanding and compassion for others. Therefore, followers of a particular sect blindly follow and promote their own beliefs. And they do not make space to understand others. There is no fellowship, there is no togetherness, there is no realization that all the sects are different, roads are different but the destination is one. The power is one though there are many names and many beliefs.

Is religion socially irresponsible?
