Hi everyone, my husband and I have been having quiet the experience at a position we took on. It's been a nightmere. Seeking advice.

Nov 1st 2014 we took on a caretaker position at a private country club and in turn for our labour we got to live in a small house for free on the property. Long story short, in the contract states we are responsible to pay 200$ a month for hydro. It doesn't say how or who to, it just says on the 1st of every month. My husband approached the treasurer of the country club in regards to who to pay the hydro to and she told him we didn't have to pay, it was only in the contract in case we were ridiculous with it. Hydro payment was never brought up again until 7 months later July 2015 when we had a meeting and the president of the country club requested funds owed. At this point my husband turned to the treasurer and said, " you said we didn't have to pay" at this point the president looked at the treasurer Upset and asked if she said that, the treasurer said yes, but that wasn't what she meant. Anyways, the president said she would speak to The clubs committee and see what to do, this was I. July 2015. Aug, sept, October, our contract ended, nov, dec, Jan went by and nothing was mentioned again about it until jan2016 in a text message stating we needed to meet and pay 2015 monies. After we explained again why we weren't going to pay they deny deny deny. All they keep saying was it was a misunderstanding and we still need to pay. If it was such a misunderstanding why would they ask for payments every month and not in 7 month stretches, the contract says 200$ a month on the 1st of every month and not one person has collected it. So they want to sue us. Now after looking over the contact, it says our start date is nov 1st 2014 and the contract is valid until October 31 2014, so technically contract expired before we even started. And this whole time we were never under contract So any advice about this situation and does this mean our contract is void?
