My finger has been sore and swollen since basketball yesterday. I tried to catch the ball during a quick pass exercise and one of the balls smashed my finger back and i thought i heard a crunch. It bruised almost instantly and is blue and purple. I cant make a fist, and it is really stiff.
Its been like this for over 24 hours and my gym teacher didn't do anything about it saying it was probably just a sprain.
My mum (who used to be a nurse) says that it is probably a fracture, and that there is no use in going to the doctors as they would just give me painkillers and a splint.
She says it will be fine but it hasn't gone down in swelling at all and the bruise on the side of my finger wasn't even where the ball hit it.
The injury is on my right hand, on my index finger, which helps as i am left handed.
You can see a vein running from the injured finger to halfway down the side of my hand, and sometimes the pain from that finger will transfer down my arm and make my arm ache.
Do you know what this is? Is it fractured, and should i go to the doctors if it gets worse? thanks :)

it's a fracture and sprain or just a really bad sprain. Whatever it is you should get medical attention. Your coach is being an arse and your mother is being negligent. If it isn't looked at and treated you could end up with permanent lose of ability in the finger/hand.
