I am a minor in Michigan and school is starting next week. This is simply a hypothetical because my employer was previously upset about my availability and now it's becoming slightly smaller; now instead of whenever up to 9:30, I've requested that I work within the hours of 3-9:00 on school nights and up to 9:30 on other nights. Basically, is it illegal if my employer fires me on these grounds?

Yes, they can definitely do that and usually do. Here's one solution: get a part time position on campus. There are usually tons of part time jobs on campus and the ones I have known pay reasonably well but not great. One great thing is that because all the part timers are students the jobs all accept and work around everybody's class schedule. It is also VERY cool to have a job that is really more like another class (you don't have to travel to a different location and might be able to get some hours between a couple classes). It's really like not working at all. The library hires a lot of student help but other departments also hire people.
