No, exercise is good for children, the more the better. But organized exercise that the child does not enjoy or using equipment of any kind that puts undue strain or pressure on their young bones, tendons and ligaments can be harmful. So try to keep the bench-presses to a minimum! Swimming is one of the best exercises anyone can do, it is low impact, resistance training that increases lung capacity, cardiovascular function and it's fun. For small children lots of play should be enough and when they have enough then they have had enough. If the child is overweight then try adjusting the diet first, if they are unfit find something that they enjoy and just try to get them to a little more of it regularly, increasing the duration of exercise each time.
If the child feels the exercise is a chore then they will treat it like one.
