I was talking to someone about Christmas and I asked this person I they got any gifts. I didn't mean it in a bad way. Now I feel like it was a stupid question to ask. So is it?

I don't think it's stupid at all! It means that you want to spark up a conversation with the person or you're interested in what they got. You can tell them that you didn't mean to offend them or ask them that question in a mean way. You can just say that you were curious what they got :)
