I bought one can and hated the food. Don't mean to give it to her on a regular basis, just wanted to know if it'll be safe this once.

Cats can exhibit fearful behavior for a variety of reasons, and may or may not be feral. It is impossible to know a cat's history. All fearful cats should be approached in a similar way, but will take varying amounts of time and patience depending on their experience and temperament.
1. Tame cats that have lost their home (strays) may revert to fearful behavior. These cats can often be tamed easier and faster than feral cats, but you can't know this.
2. True feral cats have had no direct contact with humans. It is important not to give these cats any reason to be fearful. If they develop positive experiences with you, they can be completely domesticated in time, but if you move quickly, chase them or try to grab them, you will risk traumatizing the cat.
