I had changed the decor of my home and my partner's son came to visit and he asked where a painting that belongs to me had gone. I find that rude.

No it doesn't sound rude to me, Kids dont filter what they think so to him he thought "oh the painting is gone I wonder where it is" and on top of that kids speak everything they think so.. It is natural for child to ask questions like that. He meant no harm and basically it was a subconscious question he asked.
Proverbs 22:6 states "train a boy in the way he should go; even when he grows old he will not depart from it". We as parents set the perameters for our children and are expected to teach them their boundaries. Unfortunately, all parents have different opinions as to what a child's boundaries are... we can only educate our own children. As far as other people's children we apply the words in 1 Thessalonians 5:14 which mentions that we should be patient toward all.
