As an Professional Piercer, if being pierced with hollow needle, you may have rings inserted. We typically suggest barbells (studs), because we are piercing a straight channel and obviously rings are curved. This means your tissues going to manipulate to the curved barbell, which adds longer healing time. Rings are more likely to get bumped. That can also prolong the healing.
If you are being pierced with piercing gun, then you have to start with studs. The stud is what pierces or penetrates your skin.
Best of luck! Hope this helps!
