There's this site, 9to5 dot cc. For the better part of a decade, they've been publishing weekly podcasts and hand drawn comics without fail. They've promoted in several websites, reddit and some canadian newspaper, as I've noted. And they've never ranked on alexa (~5m currently, far below the threshold).
The truth is, to escape the void of anonymity, you must offer your visitors potent incentive. Be it financial (lucrative deals, paid promotion), innovative & unique tools / experience of intrigue, social status (ie all their friends already joined), an easy to find domain (thanks to squatting, you'd need to amass a small fortune to acquire one).
If you think you can dig a little trench and divert some of the flow of virtual activity to your empty pond, you have another thing coming.
