Is it OK to pay more than your utility bill is? Will the extra credit show up on your next bill?

Some utility companies probably don't like it. I get gas and electric bills separately and I've paid more on the gas bill which is smaller and the credit showed up and worked its way down over several months. Nobody ever contacted me and said don't.
