Is it legal to do a graffiti in a duplex house???

Details:

I rent this house and I would like to buy a wall and set it in the back of the house to do some graffiti on it.
But is this illegal?
I live in California if this makes any difference.

Graffiti in & of itself is not illegal. The problem is when you do it on public buildings without permission. On your own private wall there probably would not be a problem. Best to check with your landlord 1st though.
