I want music. I like music. But music is expensive. Is it illegal to download mp3 files of YouTube videos? It is free for public viewing, and I can do so as long as I have wifi or data. But I would like music when I don't have data as well. The only reason why I would say it is illegal is because of the ads that YouTube makes you view. However, that leads into another discussion about whether the chrome extension of ad blocker is illegal. If I can watch YouTube on my computer without ads (using ad blocker), would it be wrong for me to download those mp3 files?

I don't think it is. All the youtube to mp3/mp4 sites that I use say they're completely legit. I've used it for years, downloading tons of music and videos, and I haven't gotten in any trouble yet.
YouTube is a free-for-all. Once people put their content on it, it's public content that can be downloaded as you wish. As long as it's a "free" youtube video (some you have to pay for, and it'll tell you if you have to), download away. Fair game.
BTW if you look around and click a few links you can read the actual youtube license.
