I work in information services at a hospital. I've been working here for three years almost while I've been in school and have just graduated. I work mainly in support/maintenance of user accounts and my goal is to eventually be working in the server room as a systems engineer. Right now in the economy it's hard finding jobs at entry level for a systems engineer. I'm possibly going to take a full time job doing another form of IS support and hope that later when the economy picks back up I can find a job that will get me on track to what I want to do. Is it a safe idea to seep working support or should I hold out for something more like what I'm looking for? I'm just afraid of employers looking at me only as a support guy and not a technical guy.
Is it easy to change careers after being in one type of job for a long time?

It's hard for sure at first. But if you love what you're doing and you're interested with it, then do it. As long as you're happy for what you are doing then it will be easy for you to adapt. As a suggestion, working on a server room is somehow enjoyable (already experienced).
