I'm Japanese and interested in American comics. But I'm so confused by comic terms.
I thought comic strips are comics which consisted of multiple panels. But I found that Far side is introduced as a comic strip.
Is Far side a cartoon or a comic strip?

A cartoon generally refers to an animated video (e.g. Looney Tunes). Comic strips are in fact shorter comics usually consisting of multiple panels (e.g. Peanuts). Comic *strips* are generally shorter pieces, while a comic *book* will be a longer comic work that tells a story (e.g. Marvel's Spider Man). Even though Far Side may generally only consist of one panel, that's just a stylistic choice, and the format is still a comic strip. Technically you could call it a cartoon and be correct, but nowadays cartoon is generally used to refer to animation.
