It depends on what's in it. Personally, I consider most salads to be appetizers. But I know a lot of people could make a meal out of a chicken salad.
I would consider chicken salad an appetizer, though the dictionary defines an appetizer as a small portion of food or drink served before the main course. In my opinion, all salads are appetizers.
