Is Call of Duty: World at War related to any of the previous Call of Duty games?

I'm thinking about getting the game so I was wondering if WAW is in any way related to any of the previous Call of Duty games (COD1, COD2 and COD3). I've haven't played some of them so are there any recurring characters or anything else that I should know of? Is WAW more like a standalone FPS game? Can I still play it?

some people will call it call of duty 5 because it came after 4,it is similar to cod 3 and more developed, it has old guns old equipments etc however, the gameplay is almost exactly like cod 4
