Is a series or a single book better?

Dividing a book into different parts and making it into a series is probably better, because if you leave one on a cliffhanger, more people will want to read the next book. In addition, since the plot is more spread out, you can add more detail into each book. Maybe write a trilogy? :) Good luck!
