A ribbon cable is a flat connector cable between a device (hard drive, optical drive or floppy drive) and the motherboard. they are usually beige, grey or black (although other colours are available).
It is around 2 inches wide and roughly 12 inches in length.
It looks like someone has taken lots of little wires and laid them next to each other and then glued them together flat, there is one wide plug at each end..
