Is 12 years old a good age to own a Maltese dog?

My family and I have been looking into adopting a dog and we wanted a small dog. I know dogs are a lot of work and I've had pets before so I understand their needs. But I was wondering if that was a good breed for my age, and my family to start with?

Anyone of any age can own any breed of dog. It's not so much the dog, but how responsible the owner is. Some breeds take more work than others, and you need to be willing to put in that work to train the dog.

My wife and I have raised big dogs, 2 german sheps (138 lbs & 108 lbs) 
We rescued another aussie mix, was to be about 60 lbs. She was about laid back as a pup can be but grew to over 80 lbs. 
When she seen her time & we have grown older, we agreed to adopt a smaller pup.
We are so happy!  We adopted a Rat Terrier mix and he is so special!
Our anwser is yes, there are breeds for your needs. Make sure you investigate. 
A maltese generaly lives 12-15.
