i'm writing a paper in my college english class (high school senior, btw.) on my desired career choice. i chose art education, but i don't know enough about the field, as the perameters of the paper are described: "current methods used in different institutions," "how it has improved over time," and just any other useful fact. Mostly, i am interested in getting the point of view from actual art teachers. I don't really care which age group i teach (little children are wonderful things to watch grow in creativity, even i know that. also, older kids, teenagers, well, i might relate to them better... as i am one...) or in what city. so information and tips from any and all sources that view this would be fabulous. thanks!

Well, I believe that as a modern art teacher you have more options in your curriculum that you might have been allowed in the past. I think this is an improvement of the field, in many ways. I think it's generally accepted that the art educator is allowed to choose lots of different mediums to try, as opposed to the stringent art guidelines of the past. Also, Newish advances like digital photography and the internet are making things very exciting. Yet, you still have all the great art history from before this age.
My advice for art teachers: be sure to compliment/show interest in what the students come up with even if it's not your style! Kids these days don't have very thick skin and need to be encouraged to work hard.
If it is a project, allow students to deviate somewhat from the guidelines so they are enjoying themselves.
Also, be sure to show all your classes an Andy Goldsworthy movie. Crazy stuff! (Note: sorry I'm not a teacher)
