...  hide in the woods, witches, goblins, giants, the list goes on and on. Societies that appear to have nothing in common and are located in different parts of the world have the same kinds of monsters in their folk lore and stories. 

Why do you think this is? Why do so many societies throughout history have the same types of monsters even though many of these societies never communicated with each other?

Answer

Whether it is an urban legend or a historical folklore, the monsters created in stories remain same because of human instincts and natural fears. Even if two people live miles apart, the basic fact that they are afraid of things they can not perceive or have power over them is left unchanged. That's why ultimately the same types of monsters are created.
