Because that is what you were shown as being normal, you did not have any other example of how things could be. But since you are aware of this, you can make a conscious effort to change and I hope you will. Otherwise you will miss out on so much!
Treating others the way you want to be treated was NOT pushing love away. The golden rule is to be NICE to people, and if they push you away that is OK! As long as you know you did the right thing! That is all that matters. ;)
