Ok there are two themes here. The spiritual thought and the Merchandise part.

Under the spiritual part: the birth of Jesus is celebrated but if you contribute to the merchandised part of Christmas; you are still basically part of the spiritual process because gifts were bestowed unto Jesus. Such is the practice of giving during Christmas. If you want history; a Christmas tree derives from Roman times when they would but skulls under a tree.
