If you watch videos from youtube on a laptop, does it eat up your memory on the laptop?

No more so than on a PC. The video is streamed not downloaded.
Good idea to delete Temporary Internet Filkes now and then,
Tools; Internet options; Browsing History; click delete; just have the temporary files checked; click delete
