I thought it was a simple question but my many searches have come up empty. Some friends and I are having a bit of a debate about the topic. Basically what we want to know is, if you commit a crime but haven't been questioned, taken into custody or charged by the police as of yet but the police are looking for you, what kind of information are they allowed to divulge about the crime to the people they ask about you. For example if they go to a friends or a family members house looking for you or asking questions about you, will they tell those people why it is they are looking for you and what crime you have been believed to have committed? I don't mean a major crime such as armed robbery or murder. Maybe something like theft between the amounts of $3000-$5000. Or damaging somebody's property within the same amount, i.e throwing rocks through someones home window or vandalizing their car. One of my friends believe that the police are not allowed to divulge the information of the crime whilst two others believe that they can. Thank you in advance for your responses.

well a last ditch effort to find you and they have run out of clues and they have exhausted everything they have leads then they start talking to people around the area once in a while they will devulge information only if they have to getting what they want and they know how to talk to get the information they need
