Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening.
The summer solstice (or estival solstice), also known as midsummer, occurs when a planet's rotational axis, or geographical pole on either its northern or its Southern Hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star that it orbits.
It does not mean middle of summer. :-)
"First day of summer" means Summer solstice.
